There’s something incredibly special about capturing the soul of a shelter pet. At Motion Media, photography is how I tell stories—and some of the most rewarding stories I’ve ever told come from behind the lens at the Humane Society. Volunteering my time to photograph dogs and cats waiting for adoption has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my work. Here’s why I do it—and why it matters so much.

Every Animal Deserves to Be Seen

When a shelter pet has a photo that captures their personality—their goofy grin, soulful eyes, or snuggly nature—it changes everything. Potential adopters don’t just see “another dog” or “just a cat.” They see a friend. A companion. A family member.

A great photo can be the difference between being overlooked and getting noticed.

Photos Bring Out Their True Personality

Shelters can be overwhelming and noisy, which makes it hard for animals to shine. But when I get them outside or into a quiet space and let them just be themselves, that’s when the magic happens.

Whether it’s a puppy full of wiggles or a shy cat finally making eye contact with the camera, my goal is always the same: show who they are at heart.

It’s a Way to Give Back With What I Love

Not everyone can adopt or foster—but we all have something to give. For me, it’s photography. Donating my time and skills to help animals find homes is one of the most meaningful ways I can serve.

Every session reminds me that even small actions—like snapping a photo—can have a huge ripple effect.

Helping Them Find Their Forever

When I hear that one of “my models” got adopted after someone fell in love with their photo… I melt. It’s the best feeling. These animals have so much love to give, and being part of their journey to a forever home is truly an honor.

Want to Help, Too?

Support your local shelter. Adopt. Foster. Donate. Or volunteer your own gifts—whether it's photography, social media, walking dogs, or organizing supplies. It all matters.

And if you’re ever in need of a new best friend? The animals I photograph at the Humane Society would love to meet you.

Let’s Use Our Gifts for Good

At Motion Media, storytelling is at the heart of everything we do. Volunteering with the Humane Society reminds me of the power of images to create connection, spark love, and change lives—one pet at a time.
